Artist Statement

A Brave New World

In painting most artists investigate a theme. Theirs is a linear progression founded on variations. Form and content for these artists take on a set within a determined field. Cezanne chose a subject matter and treated them with his way of seeing. His still lifes, figures, and landscapes grew to become multiplications or what has recently been called a “signature style”. Cezanne worked on the structures of certain things and gave us a way to approach a subject.

On the other hand I approach a subject with a different mind set each time. My paintings differ from each other and are less linear in terms of following a logical progression. By “changing my mind” from day to day I refrain from being repetitive. My work tends to be clustered in twos and threes, and I try to vary my creativity vertically. The works of Paul Klee and Joseph Cornell are an example of that diversity in other artists.

The under lying thread throughout my work is myself. I try to create things which are new. Abstraction leads us from our every day lives and into a separate reality. The Modernists opened up a universe. Automatism or the “unpurposeful” act, are a wellspring for material. I am like a naturalist in this parallel world. My pieces are a record of my explorations. My process is driven by my curiosity.
